Later in the year, we'll post more information here about running events for Poverty & Homelessness Action Week 2011: a form for you to register your event, and a map of all the events that are planned. Register your details with us, and we'll let you know when information is added here.
Fundraising at Poverty & Homelessness Action Week events
Events in Poverty & Homelessness Action Week are primarily about raising awareness of the problems of poverty, homelessness, poor housing and related issues in Britain – and promoting positive solutions to them. However, events also offer opportunities for raising funds.
We encourage you to make the most of this chance to raise money both for local initiatives and national campaigns. You might hold a collection at the end of an event, or in a church service, by allocating the proceeds of your usual collection.
This is a great chance to support local projects making a difference in your community, or to raise funds for your own work. However, we also ask you to recognise that fundraising at events benefits from the work put in by the Action Week partners in creating a UK-wide awareness opportunity. If Action Week is to happen in future years, the partners need financial support from local groups.
Therefore, if you plan to hold a collection or other fundraising effort at your Action Week event, we ask that you make a contribution to the national organisers. One option is to donate 50% of the proceeds to the national partners and to a local organisation. Another option is to hold a ‘Cup of Tea’ collection( see below), and donate the proceeds directly to either Church Action on Poverty, Housing Justice or Scottish Churches Housing Action. If you are collecting money for the national partners at your event, you can order Gift Aid donation envelopes by contacting the partners directly.
We do appreciate your support in this. We understand that some groups raise substantial sums during Action Week. If 50% of your proceeds seems an excessive amount, you could consider making a smaller donation in advance and becoming a sponsor of Action Week. To discuss this, please contact Alison Gelder at Housing Justice: or 020 7723 7273.
Cup of Tea appeal
Church Action on Poverty, Housing Justice and Scottish Churches Housing Action ask your church congregation to hold a Cup of Tea day after your normal Sunday service on Homelessness Sunday (31 January) or Poverty Action Sunday (7 February).
Ask everyone to pay £1 or whatever they can afford for their tea or coffee after the service. Then send the money to Church Action on Poverty, Housing Justice or Scottish Churches Housing Action. All money raised from this appeal will be used directly to support the development of projects to help homeless people or people in poverty.
